SCHOOL OF MINES. Mr Montgomery at Karangahake.
On Monday evening- Mr Montgomery, of the Thames Sctiool of Mines arrival at Karanq-ahnKe, and purposes spending the next four 01 five weeks in Ouinemuri district, as, if suitable accommodation can be provided, he will devote a fetf days to YVaihi and Owharou, 5 Karaugahake, however, will be head- quarters, where Mr Liddell has kin lly given up the use of his comfortable two-room cottage (suua;ed right opposite Mr Shepherd's hotel on the Mackytown side of the river) to the lecturer ; the only fault being that it is rather small for the purpose required. The first two or" ilnee day a weie taken up with unpacking, getting shelves erected, and other needful alterations, but 8 start was made on Thuisday night., and wovk has now commenced in earnest. Mr Montgomery decided to conduct two classes Jaily, so as to give all hands an opportunity of attend inur ; the morning 1 class lasting from 10 to 12, the evening class from 7 till 9. In addition, Mr AJontgomeiy purposes lecturing- on three nights of each week on the subject, of gold and silver ores ami their treatment, in course of which will bo fully explained the various processes in vomie foi extracting the precious metals from the raw material ; a small portable furnace having been brought from Thames with this object in view. Assaying will be proceeded with on and off during each day. With respect t~> assaying it may be well to remind our readers that the following scale of fees was adopted by the School of Mines a short time since. Non-membeib, each assay made by Mr Montgomery, 5s ; members 2s 6d. But those selecting to cany out their own assay under Mi Montgomery's supervision and directions, may dp so and be piovided with all uecessary chemuuhj etc., free of charge ; this libeiul arrangement having been lesolved on in order to encourage miners to learn ho*v to assay for themselves. After the termination of bis present visit to Ohine* muri district we understand Mr Montgomery will gire a fortnight each to Te Aroha and Waiorongonmi, which course of lectures will probably commence about the 1st M ay. We would urge every miner to make a special effort to as far as possible avail of the opportunity by this means afforded cf obtaining information, wuich may prov<* of untold value to him in the pursuit of his avocation.
