TE AROHA JOCKEY CLUB RACES.
The first race meeting under the auspices of the above newly -formed club, tonk place yesterday, and it was piett} generally admitted to have been an unqualified success. The weather was all that coull be desired, and from an early hour in the morning- crowds of pleasuie seekers from all quarters might have been se*-n wending- tlwirway towards tin* race-course. The first event, Wiib to have started at one o'clock, but long befou> that hour had arrived there weio fully 400 people on the ground. The com>e was in splendid condition, and the Stewards left no stone unturned to earn out the programme in its entirety. The. proprietors of the publican's and tetu , perance booths did their very best to meet the demands of their respective patrons, and the totalisator was fairly patronised by the general public as well as the betting fraternity. At intervals throughout the day the proceedings were enlivened by the Te Aroha brass band which played an excellent selection of music, and the course was graced with the presence of quite a number of ladies, elegantly and tastefully attired. Mr Wainwright performed the duties of Judge in a manner that must have been satisfactory to all concerned, and Mr McNicoll's system of starting- met with general approbation \ Mr Reuben Panwas as usual to the fore as clerk of the course, and many an unlucky wight and tyke had reason to regret his temerity in attempting to cross the race-crurse at the wrong moment. The onerous duties of clerk of the scales were admirably carried out by Mr Adam Menzies, and the outcome of the day's sport showed pretty clearly that thehandicappers were not far out in their estimation of the merits of the different horses with which they had to deal, although of course it was uot to be expected they would please all parties.
