GREAT FIRES IN AUSTRALIA. (REUTERS TELEGRAMS )

Melbourne, Feb ]6. A destructive fire broke out last night in tho extensive timber yards belonging to Messrs C. S. Rosa and Co. Damage to the extent of £15,000 was done before the flames were subdued. It is believed that tho loss is fully covered by insurance, but particulars are not available. The gas works, which immediately adjoins the timber yard, were at one time in great danger of destruction, but fortuantely the progress of the fire in that direction was eventually checked. Melbourne, Feb 17. — The total loss by fire at Messrs Rosa and Co.'s timber yard yeßterday is estimated at £10,000. To what extent this is covered by insurance is not known. Sydney, February 17. — A most destructive fire broke out to-day on the premises of Messrs Holdsworth and Macpherson, wholesale ironmongers. Tho loss is estimated £20,000, which, however, is covered by insurance. Messrs Holdsworth and Macpherson are insured to the extent of £24,000, divided among the following offices : — Commercial Union Assurance, the lioyal, the North British, the Northern, tke Liverpool, London, and Globe, and Australian Alliance (Melbourne.)
