OHINEMURI COUNTY COUNCIL.
Tiik usual monthly meeting 1 of the above was held in the Council Chambers, Paeron, on the afternoon Saturday, 13th inst. Present-: Crs Cock (chairman), Nicholls, Corbott, Moore, Strange, Walsh, and Humphreys. The minutes of the last wionthly meeting wore first read and confirmed. The appointment of Mr Siintns (at the recent "special mooting of the Council), as cleik, treasurer, collector, and foreman of woiks on probation for three montus, with salary at the rate o£ £200 per annum, was oonfin'ned. Correspondence was next read and dealt with. Mr John Campbell, on behalf of himself and other prospectors, wrote requost irtg assistance in the matter of providing a bettei truck to ParaU.iwai. Cr Moore advocated assisting 1 these prospectois. and it was resolved that £10 be expended in improving 1 the track. Crs Moore and Humphreys to superintend the expenditure. Mr T. Cummings wrote complaining rif partiality having been shown in the matter of giving employment !f6r county works. Letter received. With respect to a letter from Mr J. M. Coote objecting to the proposed erection of a btui^e on land which Mr Coote stated was altogether his ; the Wtte'r was rscei.ed, and it was resolved to communiw ith the Suivey Office for furthoi information. The Clerk of the Thames County Council wrote din wing attention to the fact that the time allowed un *er the Counties Act, 1876, tor adjustment of a'-sutn and liabilities had expired without any adju-t-nuiit being effected, and requesting the Council to apply to Government frtr an an !itor, and stating the T lames Council had no reply to offer to the contentions submitted fur its consideration. A long discussion ensued re adjustment of assets and liabilities. Cr Uumplneys remarked it was highly desirable they should know their true financial position. Cis Ilumpmeys, Nicholl*, arid Moore •specially refuired to the fact that the Ohinomuri County was not credited with aio portion of the £5006 received by the Thames County foi kami truis sold, a number of which were, they b'lieved, within the bonnd.uies of Ohinemuri. It was at length Resolved that Mr O. J. Dearie be requested to" investigate the statement bi ought dp 1 by the ad interim Cleik, Mr E. Eclwaids, go into the whole of the accounts, dtline the county linpndary with regard td the kailri tiees and the number belonging to Ohincmuii County, draw lip a general statement, and report to the Council within the next fortnight, and bring forwa&d any further information obtainal)le ; after which Government to be communicated with and requested to send down an auditor. All councillors agreed that iio more c"dmp'elent person than Mr Dearie, ridr one more thoroughly conversant with the affairs of the county could be found. A telegram was received from the Mines Department stating that £166 13s 4d was available on subsidy for a prospecting track to Waitekauri. Tenders for the position oL' engineer to the county were received from Mes.srs F. P.ivitt, Cheal, and Jackson and Kenny, .md on the motion of Cr Strange, seconded by Cr Corbett, that of Mr Pavitt was accepted. Mr Pa\ it'ss tender was consider ably lower than the others. (!r Moor drew attention to the fact that excellent stone for roail metal was being obtained in conn ;ction with the works in piogiess on the road to Karangaliake, and suggested its being utilised. The road would have to bo metalled. I It was resolved to call for tenders for a I oiippl,) Oi load metal, and also for the' maintenance of roads. Cr Moore drew attention to the necessity oi something being done to improve the condition of the road from Paeroa to Owharoa. The 1 OhaiHilari was requested to write to Government requesting to know wlult had become of the unexpended balance of £5000 voted by Government for the Mackytown - Uwharoa rouil deviation, £1100 only having been spent thereon. The Gliairman announced that the Council had decided to authorise the expenditure of the balarice of the money granted for the tracks at Tui, Te Aroha, by the local cohnnitt'eej and the work would be at ones pioceeded with. Mr A. A. Bowler, Lower Waitoa, wrote ' a king the Council to have what was known as Lower Diain Road made, for the bent-fit o£ the settlers, as it could be ddrie" at little cost to the council seeing that it would be througli Crotfn Lands, and Government would give a subsidy of £2 to £,1, and the road would answer rill present requirements ; and further offering to make six chains of the road himself. Mr Bowler enclosed a statement, estimating the work woitld cost £150 ; or ai!ter the Government subsidy only £50 to the council. Cr Strange supported the application, which was referred to the Board of Works. On the motion of Cr Corbett tho Office hours for transaction of business were fixed as follows : Wednesday, 1 till 4 ; Saturday^ 10 till 12. Next meeting of Council will be on Saturday, Muruh 13.
The horse race on Saturday evening last for £5 u side, half a mile on the Arolm nice course between Tyntax run by Mr N. Clenry and Mr Hetherington's bay pony catch weights* resulted in an easy victory for Tyiitax.- A good skirt was effected, ana both horses kept ni close company till fcoming rip the straight run for home, where Mr Hetherington's steed ran off the course, leaving Tyntux to win as he liked. '
