A WELLINGTON OPINION.

Wellington, Feb 9. The following appeara in the editorial columns of last night'a " Post" :—: —

Newspaper Energy and Government Apathy. The enterprise of the Auckland newspaper proprietors contrasts strongly with the apathy of the Government in regard to the supposed derelict seen near Cape Maria Van Diemen. It was undoubtedly the duty of Government to have taken immediate notice of the report made by Capfc. Savory, and to have sent out a steamer to ascertain definitely what it was

he saw. If it really was a large ship on her ' earn ends, there was, of course, a possil ility that some of the vessel's crew or pasf ongers might still have been on board alive, i-ven if the vessel had been abandoned, it uas a most dangerous object to leave floating about in the way of other vessels, as it might easily have caused further wrecks through vessels running into it at night time. The Government should not have lost a moment in sending a steamer in search, but as they showed no disposition to move, Mr Brett, of the Auckland Star, with characteristic energy and enterprise, chartered a small steamer at his own expense and sent it out in search of the supposed wreck. The result of the expedition will be anxiously looked for by the public.
