GOUNOD'S NEMESIS. The Great Composer Unable to Escape from a Woman.
New York, January 14.— A London cable special says : A gentleman wrote to Mrs Weldon on behalf of M. Gounod, suggesting that she relax in her pursuit of the composer and allow him to come to England in order to conduct the performance of his " More otVita " in Albert Hall, which is to be given at the Queen's request. Mrs Weldon has replied that she is astonished at the impudence of this requeab. She has just returned from Paris and is setting the law in motion by every means in her power, with a view of o btaining the damages for libel with which she charges Gounod. She declares that if he sets foot in England she will have him arrested at once. Gounod, when interviewed on the subject, was silent as to the lawsuit and its cause, but complained of Mrs Weldon's incessant persecution for twelve years. Gounod has asked the Archbishop to allow him to place a writing table at the foot of the altar where Joan of Arc stood in the Rheims Cathedral when Charles the Dauphin was crowned in 1429, in order that he may derive inspiration from the position in writing a mass.
