H\. T. Howe, Sec. an. l Treas. (The Clerk explained that on receipt of the telegrams demanding the amounts stated towards the Thames Hospital und Charitable Aid Boards, he at onco forwarded same to Messrs Hesketh and Richmond, asking if these telegrams in any way altered their opinion previously given, and received the following reply) : Auckland, Jan. 80, 1886 Mr Chas. Tuck, Clerk Piako County Council. Dear Sir,— Re Hospitarand Charitable Aid ; 1 We have to acknowledge yours of the 25th mat., with the accompanying telegrams. 2We do not consider that these telegrams in any way affect the position. There are no such boards as those named in the telegrams! and we are still strongly inclined to to think that there would be considerable difficulty in enforcing these demands, 'especially as regards that for* charitable aid. We are inclined to think mat the District Board may enforce fheir rate for hospitable and charitable aid as a ratt 1 covering both purposes jrintly, but we cannot yet see how united boards can enforce any of th«>ir demands for a separate contribution. 8 Apart from this, the information before us does not enable us to judge of the regularity of the proceedings at the Thames, and as to whether any statutory liability has been created in the prescribed manner. 4 Under all the circumstances, a-id seeing that there is so much confusion and doubt as to the operation of the Act, we think the council would be wise in not complying with the demands that have been made. Yours faithfully, Heskkth & Richmond. Waiorongomai, Jan. 13, 1886* J. B. Smith, Esq, Waitoa. Dear Sir. — Would you kindly let us know what has been done in the matter of repairing the track to the mines from Waiorongomai township. It is absoI lutely dangerous for horaes even without a load. The same remarks apply to the short track from the top of Muy Queen grade to oar store. Were the track made passable, the bulk of our goods would go by the tramway. From your conversation with our Mr Murray, we understood the whole would have been repaired during the holidays. Taking into consideration that almost the whole traffic is dependant on the track lirsl mentioned, we trust you will ui??eyour council to have the necessary -WHT pairs done a 9 early as possible before tWf weather breaks. — Yours truly, Wells & Houtter, Per J. McLeod Murray. This letter was endorsed by Mr Smith ac iollows ; * 4 The Chairman : Would
