BRAVE ATTEMPT TO RESCUE. Birmingham, December 4.
An inqucßt was held to-day at Djsthill, near Tamworth, respecting the death of Thomas Vernon, who, whilst cleaning out a ptill at Messrs Balfour's Chemical Works, was overpowered by the fames which had t scaped for another fct.il? 250 yards distant, both stills being connected. Three men named Charles Clayton (the foreman), Jo»iah Wild, and Radford entered the etill one by one in order to cave Vernon, but each was overpowered by the gas, and had to be drawn ont of the still by ropes fastened around their waists. Vernon was afterwards got out by iron hooks The medical evidence was to the effect that death was due to asphyxia from sulphuretted hydrogen. The jury returned a verdict of " Accidental death," and recommended that in future there should be no connection between the two stills whilst one was being cleared out. The Coroner complimented Clayton, Radford, and Wild on the bravery they had shown in trying to rescue Vernon.
