THE IRISH QUESTION. Lord Salisbury's Policy. (REUTERS TELEGRAM )
London, January 20. A letter has been published from Mr Gladstone, in which he declines to receive a deputation from Belfast. In his letter he denies the plan attributed to him for the settlement of the Irish question, and states he awaits the proposals of the Government upon the subject. London, January 22. In the Houseof Lords to-day, the Marquis of Salisbury, referring to Irish affairs, stated the government in Ireland had been virtually entrusted to the newly- appointed Chief Secretary, Mr W. El, Smith, and Her Majesty's Government were prepared to act promptly upon the receipt of this report. In the House of Commons, Mr Gladstone stated he still adhered to his manifesto re garding Irish affairs. He deprecated the postponement of the scheme of local government, and advised the House to accord a patient hearing to the claims put forward by Mr Parnell and his followers. Mr Parnell, speaking on the same subject, expressed, the opinion that, the right of legislative autonomy being once conceded to Ireland, it would not be difficult to settle the details, and while securing the integrity of the Empire to protect the interest of the minority*
