HORRIBLE EXECUTION. A Criminal's Head Severed From His Body at Norwich, England.
At Norwich, on November 30th, a horrible and sickening sight was witnested, when Robert Goodale, a market gardener, was hanged for the murder of bis wife, at Wisbeach, on September 15th last * fifteen-stone weight was used, and the drop was bix feet When the trap was sprung, the rope rebounded violently, >and Goodale's head was severed, from his body, the trunk and head falling to the ground, the head lying at the feet and blood oozing freely from the body and the head. The spectators were naturally horror- stricken. An inquest was then held. The hangman said Goodale's head looked as though it had been cut with a knife. He had a thin vertebra. The surgeon said the hangman was sober and cool and collected when he sprung the trap, and that Goodale's death was almost instantaneous, and was a more merciful one than if it had been caused by strangulation. The jury rendered a verdict in accordance with the facts, attaching no blame to the hangman.
