We are obliged to hold over till next issue report of the Piako County Council meeting on Thursday las^t, and a good deal of other interesting matter. At the Council meeting it vas decided to instruct Mr Pnvitt, County Engineer, to prepare estimates for various road works, etc. Mr Cornelius Murphy wrote stating the punt at Waiorongmnai was not paying, and ho would have to close it unless subsidised to the extent of 2s per day. On the motion of Cr Firth, it was resolved co grant the subsidy askod for. Judge Gillies has declined the Presidentship, and the election of a Pr^id -nt will take place on the 20th February. On Saturday evening last a meeting, as previously announced by advertisement in the News, was held in the Hot Springs Hotel, Te Aroha, to consider the question of arranging for a race meeting at Te Aroha, at an early date. The following were present : — Messrs F. Pavitt, Hethrington. Mackie, Downes, Cowan, Hornibrook, Quinn, Rudolph* Goldsworthy. jun., Tierney, Frazer, Mills, Cocks, Quinlan etc , etc. Mr Pavitt, convener o f the meeting, was unanimously moved to the chair. After the matter had been discussed, it was unanimousty resolved that a race meeting be held, and the following appointments were nftide : — Sec. Mr Pavitt, Treas. Mr G Lipsey, Committee : Messrs Quinn, Frazer, P. Quinlan, Hornibrook, Rudolph, Don, Gavin, Hethring ton, Tierney, Bradley, Ritcheson, Haywood, Warren, Dobson, Graves, Lawless, rfmardon, Heuthcote, and Cocks. Mr J. F. Cocks was appointed to collect subscriptions, itfo date was fixed, but it was generally thought desirable the meetingshould be held within a few days of the Paeroa races (March 17), so as to admit of horses from a distance attending" both meetings. It was arranged that the Committee should meet on the following Snturda}' evening. A scramble for 'lollies 1 followed, and then a tea of bread and butter, cakes and tarts, each child receiving a present, and packet of sweets. Three hearty cheers were then given for theii teacher, who drove them all back again to the township, which was reached just before dusk. About 1 a.m. on Tuesday morning last Mr John Wallace's three-room cottage, Te Aroha, was discovered to be on fireSeveral neighbours quickly arriving some of the furniture was saved, but the house was soon totally burnt to the ground ; together with a quantitj' of household goods. An inquiry will be held on Wednesday next by Warden Kenrick respecting the fi»-o at Owharoa. Mr Walsh purposes rebuilding the hotel as soon as possible. The Hon. Mr Richardson, Minister of Public Works, paid Te Aroha a flying visit on Wednesday lust to inspect the railway works in progress. He was accompanied by Messrs J. B. Whyte, M.H.R., J. P. Maxwell, General Manager of Railways, C. Hudson, District Traffic Manager, etc. He was waited upon by deputations repiesenting the Domain Board and Te Aroha Improvement Committee. The former invited the Minister to visit the springs and Domain grounds, and expressed hearty thanks to Government for the £1000 grant for developing same. Ihe latter urged the necessity of the early opening of the railway, and every possible facility being offered in the form of cheap excursions. Mr Richardson said the Govei nment were most anxious to have the line open, and cheap excursions would be lun. The party travelled by a special train, remaining about an hour.
