REGULATIONS FOR THE ISSUE AND PAYMENT OF POSTAL NOTES.

Broken amounts may be maJo Op by the use of unobliterAted stamps not exceeding Scl in value affixed to the back of any one postal note. The blanks in a postal note for the name of the person entitled to the nioney (in the regulations referred to as the payee), and for the name of the office at which it is to be paid> may be filled in before or after issue. The purchaser of a postal note may make the note payable to " bearer" by filling in that word, or^ if the space for the name of the payee is left blank, it will be treated as if made payable to bearer. If the name of the payee is inserted iv the note, the signature to the receipt must agree with that name ; but, if the space for the name is left blank or filled • in with the word " bearer," the receipt of the person who presents the note will be received. No alteration can be made in the name of the payee or of the paying office when once filled in, except by direction of tho Postmaster-General or or a postal officer. A postal note presented by or through a banker may be paid although the signature does not correspond with the name of the payee, but the note must bear the stamp of the bank. When a postal note is presented for payment otherwise than through a banker, the postal officer shall require the person presenting the note to sign hii name on the note before bofore its payment, although the receipt lias been already signed k Nevertheless, the signature to the receipt shall, in all cases, be a sufficient authority to the postal officer for the payment of the amount of the no*e if that signature purports to be the signature of the payee ) and it shall not be necessary to prove that the receipt was signed by or under the authority of the payee. A postal note may be crossed, and the postal officer shall refuse to pay it except to a banker. If a postal note which is dr'ossdd is presented fcr payment through a bank with the name of such bank stamped on the face of it, that name may be accepted as a sufficient receipt for the amount of the note $ and the note may be paid without any other receipt. A postal note whfch \& crdssed — if presented for payment through a bank— ttoay be paid at any money order office in New Zealand, notwithstanding that the blank has been filled in with the name Of some particular office.
