B. Whyte, and tint h'* be informed that the arrangement mad" with Mr Larnach was that the Council should levy a general rate &£ £d. Thi» the Council had done, and the rate is now being collected Also, that heavy hank interest is accruing, and' that Mr Whyt 1 be requested to urge the Government te place thy promised subsidy to the credit of the Council without delay. Sub division of Waitoa Riding 1 . — Mr C Tuck, the commissioner appointed to report upon the petition praying for a sub division of the above riding, reported upon it as i.iforrnaf. Works on GoldfieM. — A communication Was received from the Public Works Department, asking the Council to indicate which of the works towards the construe tion of which subsidies bad been promised they would be prepared to undertake before the 51st March. Cr Gouid objected to any further expenditure on the Arolia goldfield. Cr Murphy thought Cr Gould ought to he the last person to make such a remark. If the Council were all like Cr Gould there would be no goldfield at all. Tln> field was f;r-t realising the- anticipations of its supporters. Cr Gould was a large property owner in the district, and would 1> benefited greatly by the goldfield. He would propose that the track to the Buck reef and the track from Fern Spur to Butler's Spur bo m»de. Cr Maclean said he also would object to further expenditure on the goldfield until the County was out of debt. Cr Mnrphy said it was to the gold field that Cr Maclean would look by and by for settlers, for the huge blocks of country in which he was interested. Cr Maclean said he spoke for the unfortunate ratepayers, who were to be pitied. Or Murphy's motion was then put and carried. Te Aroha Sepal-ate Rate.— Cr Smith wrote to the effect that the people of Te Aroha were under the impression that the rate proposed to be levied in that riding was for the purpose of the Waiorongomni and Gordon Settlement roads. They would not mind the rate if the streets of Te Aroha were to receive justice. These streets were in a disgraceful statej He recommended the Council to spend a sum of money on Bridge street, which was very dangerous. —Consideration deferred. Petition From Te Aroha,— The petition of the A p oh>v residents'-bViring 61 signatures, was laid on the table.
