Melbourne, Sept 17.— Referring to New Guinea in the Legislative Assembly last night, the Hon. Mr Service stated that he considered that the territory should be thrown open for the purposes of trade. He also proposed the appropriation of the Victorian quota tou r ard3 the £50,000 per annum for five years required from the oolonies towards the expenses of the High Commissioner, The Victorian Parliament has been prorogued until December 5. Melbourne, Sept 19. — The Supreme Court confirmed the sentence passed by the Court Martial on the subordinate members of the permanent Artillery Force, Adelaide, September 18. H. A. Wood, accountant to the Court of Insolvency, has absconded. An examina tion of his books has resulted in the discovery of a deficiency of upwards of £10,000. The police authorities hope to intercept Wood at New Zealand, to which colony he is believed to have proceeded. Adelaide, Sept 18.— Wheat market steady, 4s to 5s Id ; flour (town brands), £8 5s to £8 10s j country ditto, £7 5s to £7 17s Cd. Adelaide, September 19. — The Government offer i reward of £300 for the arrest of ! Wood, the defaulting accountant to the Insolvency Court. According to the information at the disposal of the police, he was laat seen in Auckland. Sydney, Sept 17. The New South Wales Government have at present uuder consideration two proposals for Sin Francisco' Mail Service, one emanating from the New Zealand Government, and the other from the Pacific Mail Steamship Company. The latter proposal is for a service independeut of New Zealand control Their decision i s expected shortly,
