Sydney, ' Sept 10.— In the Legislative Assembly yesterday an amendment to the Add ress-in- Reply to the Governor's Speech was moved by the laader of the Opposition, to the effect that the Government was deserving of censure for not calling Parliament together earlier. The debate is still proceeding. Sydney, Sept. 11. — Advices to hand from New Guinea announce the safe arrival there of Sir Peter Scratchley, the High Commissioner, with his attendants, all being well. Sydney, Sept. 12.— The amendment to the Address-in-Reply to the Governor's Speech is still before the Legislative Assembly. The debate continues elowly, and last night the speeches made by the various members wore of a decidedly personal character. Sydney, Sept. 14.— It ia announced that the new cable rates from Europe will be 2s 8d per word Pret-s messages, and 8s lOd per word for private telegrams. Sydney, September 14. — The prevailing drought is to a great extent broken up, heavy rain having fallen in many country districts. The action for damages brought by the Bank of New South Wales against the Government, arising out of the withdrawal from the bank of the loan business of tho Government, has been concluded, but tho result is subject to a decision of the full Court. The cable repairing steamer Sherrard Osborne has ariived here from Singapore. She proceeds to Tasmania to lay the duplicats cable between that colony and. Victoria, and thereafter goes to New Zealand to repair the Cook Straits cable. Melbourne; Sept. 11.— The trial of Milne bmibh, for robbery from tbeHorsham Branch of the London Chartered Bank in March, 1884, was concluded to-day, when prisoner wan acquitted. The new Licensing Bill is being pushed forward as rapidly as possible, and has already made considerable progress in committee. Heavy rains has fallen during the last few days in Victoria and Riverina, whore it was greatly required. Adelaide, Sept. 11. — The bill providing for the payment of members, which was recently passed by the South Australian Legislative Assembly, haa been rejected by the Legislative Counoil. Adelaide, September 13. — Shipping wheat steady, 4s Id ; flour, town brands, £8 7s 6d to £8 10s ; country, £7 12a 6d to £7 15s. Melbourne, Sept. 14. — Acting on the suggestion of the Government ef Western Australia the Hon. Mr Service has proposed that the Governors of Fiji and Western Australia should have seats in the Federal Council to be held at Hobart early in 1886.
Melbourne, Sept. 16 : Advices have been received from Wilson's Promontory, stating that at two o'clock yesterday afternoon Captain Thompson, of the Greenock steamship Gult of Carpentaria (1596 tons), arrived with three boats belonging to the vessel, and reports that the, Gulf of Carpentaria, bound from Newcastle, to London via Adelaide, .while off Cleft laland struck upon a rock not marked on the chart: The vessel became a total wreok, and sank in thirty fathoms of. water within, three hours of striking.' • The' crew took; t<? the boats and effected » landing at Wilson's Promontpry. •" ;.The dwaster» , fortunately, w^9^»aijteHe4l>ylpss,ofiUfe. < - : • .«'. \
