SPORTING NEWS. Island Bay Racing Club Exhibition Meeting.
Wellington, September 5. The Island Bay Racing Club Exhibition Meeting was held to-day on the course at Island Bay. The day was fine, but rather windy. About 2,000 persons were present during the afternoon VHs Excellency the Governor, Sir V\ illiam Jervois, and party drove to the course. The starting duties were carried out in a wretched manner, and at times Mr C Hill, the starter, was hooted for tho way in which he despatched his fields. Kesults : — Hurdle Handicap of 7030v5. 2 miles. H. Redwood's Mainboom, lOst (Herd) ... 1 F. Gentry's Erebus, list 12lbs (Gentry) 2 H. Blower's Loch Lomond, 9st (Bishop) 3 Totara, Ngatiotoa, Porotawa, Kino, Little i Duke, and Havelock also ran. Mainboom j was the favourite, and won comfortably by two lengths. Time, 4min. 15sec, Dividend, £3 4s. Exhibition Handicap of lOOaovs. 1 mile. H. Redwood's Clogs, by Leolinus—Crinoline, Sot 4lbs (Chapman) 1 A. Young's The Poet, 8«t Slbs (Skinner) 2 W. Hutana's Rata, 6st (Roskrudge) ... 3 Administrator (9st 71b-?), Talebearer (9st), Pasha (Sat 51 ba), Bard (7st 71 bs), Gipsy (7st 31bs), Germaine (7st 3lbs), and Giriri (6st 7ibs?) also ran. Clogs was favourite at 3 to 1 ; Talebearer and Pasha 4 to 1 ; from 6 to 10 to 1 the others. Owing to the fractioupness of Gipsy, the starter had a good deal of difficulty with the field, and at a time when Rata was 100 yards in front of the field someone in the crowd called "Go away, boys." This the lads did, and Rata finished fir^t, with Barb second. Mr Hijlgaveitno start; and after a fow minutes' delay the horses again faced the starter, and then 10 to 1 was offered against Clogs, who had never run prominently in the first race. Another j bad start wa3 effected, and Pasha and (Talebearer were seen leading the field lat a rattling pace, with Clogs lying in the ruck. At the back of the course Rata was seen going up, and at the top of the i course had assumed the lead, with TaleI bearer and Pasha close at his heels, Clogs fourth, Poet fifth When fairly in the ftraight all the whips were out, and a grand struggle ensued. Clogs came out suddenly, and staying the longest, eventually won by half a length from The Poet, with Rata a good third. Tima, lmin. 50|secs. Divi- [ dend, £3 6s. Jones's Glaicks, 7st 41bs 3 Life Buoy, Erebus, Dynamite, and Rata also ran. Won easily. Time, lmin. 20sec Dividend, £3 9=. The Consolation was won by Pasha, Life Buoy being second, and Rata third. Talebearer, Dynamite, and Mignonette also ran.
