The Ausidei Raphael.
The desiccating atmosphere of the National Gallery in London has already produced the dreaded effect on the Ausidei .Raphael, bought from the Duke of Marlborough, and this magnificent picture, which might have been seen twelvo months ago in a nearly perfect condition, flawless with a trivial exception, and absolutely brilliant in its colouring and surface, must be sent below for repairs. Every plank in the panel on which it is painted has in a greater or less degree parted from its neighbour ; a long crack in the upper portion of the panel extends from top to bottom all through the figure of St. John ; another crack over the Virgin's left shoulder seems to be extendic <j downward, while yet another crack is distinct over the figure of St. Nicholas of Barri. Nor is this cracking all the mischief which has lately befallen this picture ; a few inches above the mitre of the prelate th^re is a large blister.
