The Speed We Are to Travel at in the Future.
Tiie North -Eastern Railway Company are at present haying built at their wprks in Darlington and Gateshad twenty new engines, to be used solely for express purposes. At the Darlington North Road works ten of the engines are to be built. One ia already completed. It runs upon four wheels (coupled), and is 7ft. 2in. in diameter. The diameter of the leading wheels is 4ft. 6in , and that of the centres Bft. 6in., the total wheel base of the engino being 16ft. Sin. The cylinder is 18in. in diameter, and has a 24in. stroke. The boiler pressure is 140 per square inch, with total heating surface of about 1,400 ft. The tender is upon six wheels of 3ft. Gin. diameter, with steel axles. It will hold 2,860 gallons of water, and carry three tons of coal. The general fittings throughout are of the moßt ap proved character, and adapted to meet all modern requirements. The weight of the engine with steam up is 42 tons*, and that of the tender 28. All the engines are to be called "Tehnant's Express Passenger Engine." They will be capable of running express from New York to Edinburgh, and vice versa, in one journey, hitherto it having been necessary to employ two engines to accomplish the same distance. In a trial run of the engine a speed of eighty miles per hour was attained. When the engines are finished the North-Eastern will possess engines— for finish, build, and general excellence—unequalled in this country.
