The Noise of the Javan Volcano.
Reports collected since the memorable eruption of Karakatoa, in August, 1883, have shown that the explosions were heard over a circle of thirty degrees radius. A more astonishing announcement still is now made by Dr. F. A. Forel, the well known Swiss physicist. He has learned that on the day of the great eruption startling subterranean noises, resembling the rolling of distant thunder, were heard in Caimanßiac, a small island of the Carribbean Sea, near the antipodes of the volcano of Sunda Strait. These sounds cannot readily be attributed to any neighbouring volcanic disturbance, and Dr. Forel is forced to infer that they may have been propagated through the en tire diameter of the earth. To test this bold hypothesis inquiries are to be made concerning the exact hour at which the detonations were heard in Caiman-Brae.
The richest men in the world are said to be Maokay (£55,000,000), , Rothschild (£40,000,000), Vanderbilt (£35,000,1 00), the Duke of Westminster (£16,000,000), and Jay Gould (£10,000,000).
