French Spies in Germany.
Another trial, similar to the lato high treason caao, though it was held with closed doors, has just coino to acloso at Leipsic, and resulted in the condemnation of the chief culprit, Janssens by name, to eight years' ponal servitude. Janssens was a Belgian by birth, and ostensibly a news paper correspondent by profession, though he was made out to be nothing else than an agent of the French Minister of War. In its pay he had lived, on and off, in the Rhine region, chiefly at Cologne, from 1878 to 1882, with the object of spying out the military secrets of the land. By bribing two non-commissioned officors at Deutz and Diiaseldorf , who made use of duplicate keys, he succeeded in obtaining copies of certain valuable written directions relative to the mobilisation of the 7th and 8th Army Corps ; while it was proved that he had also endeavoured to procure other forbidden knowledge of military matters by similar means. The incident is significant in more ways than one,
