Directly the flag fell Lantern and Ironmaster showed in front, with St. John and Pailloroo next, the favourite being absolutely last away. Alter going a furlong, the abovenamed trio were in front, followed by St. Lawrence and Umberto, and at the six-furlong post Berkeley, Alphabet, and Hazard were well up. At the sheds Lantern held a decided lead, and Marie Louise and The Ghost had joined the forward division. Lord Wilton came through at the turn, and was second entoring the straight, where Lantern, without an effort, increased his lead, and it was evident that the only contest would be for second place, the South Australian gelding maintaining his lead to the end, and winning with ridiculous ease by three lengths from Lord Wilton, who beat The Ghost by a neck for second place. The favourite was never in the race from the fall of the flag. Time, lmin, 44sec.
