STRANGE DISCOVERY IN SYDNEY. Two Boxes of Human Remains.
The other morning, as some lads were at play in the vicinity of Churchill, Sydney, they came across two boxes lying in a piece of spare ground near Potty's Hotel. With boys' curiosity they examined the contents, and were horrified to find a number of skulls and other portions of human bodies. One of the lads drew the attention of Constable Reid to the straugo "find." The Constable had the boxes conveyed to the Central Police Station, where they were examined by the officer in charge. One was an ordinary boot trunk, and contained a number of skulls and portions of skeletons covered with a sheet. The other was an ordinary deal box, about a foot square, and this also held a quantity of human remains. The boxes were labelled with Chinese characters, and bore a Government railway label from Echuca, Victoria. A number of Chinese coins were also found. It is considered that the skeleton* are those of Chinamen whom their fellowcountrymen wish to have interred in their native land. However, the matter will be decided satisfactorily, as the remains are to be viewed by Dr. Mareden. The skeletons presented the appearance of having been buried for a considerable time.
