AN OLD BURGLARY REVIVED. Arrest of a Local Jeweller on Suspicion.

Some surprise was occasioned in town today by the news that Mr John Ayres, a well- known jeweller of Wellesley-street, had beon arrested by the police on the charge of burglary, The crime which he is alleged to have committed is not of recent occurrence, but happened in June of last year. Our readers will remember that at the time in question, the shop of Messrs Hart asd Levy, pawnbrokers, Victoriastreet, was broken open, and goods to the value of £125 stolen. These included a silver jug, coin necklace, diamond ring, I and valuable gold watch and chain, and were taken from an iron deeds safe in which they were kept. Mo due to the perpetrator of the robbery could be discovered at the time, and it was concluded that the articles had found their way into the melting pot. Last evening, a young man was observed to take from his pocket a watch which was immediately recognised aa the missing "ticker." Information was given to Detective Hughes, and he traced the watch to Mr John Ayres, jeweller, | at the foot of Wellesley-street. Mr Ayres asterted that he purchased it over the counter. An information was laid against him thip morning, and he was subsequently arrested by Detective Hughes an the charge of having committed the burglary at Messrs Hart and Levy's. A search was made amongst Mr Ayres's stock and effects, but none of the other articles were found.
