Melbourne, May 13. •— The convict Barnes was executed yesterday morning for the murder of J. B. Slack. Melbourne, May 14.— A slight shock of earthquake was experienced here yesterday The disturbance was felt all over the whole of Victoria and in Tasmania. Sydney, May 15. -The New South Wales contingent are under orders to return to Australia, and will leave Suakim for Sydney on the sth June. The Right Rev. Dr. Moran, Roman Catholic Archbishop of Sydney, leaves for Rome on 12th Juno. He expects to be back in Australia by December next. Sydney, May 15. The Government have been advised that the New South Wales Contingent, which will shortly embark for Sydney, will be transported at the expense of the British Government. The whole of the horses sent to the Soudan with the colonial artillery have been presented to the War Office as a gift from New South Walss, A telegram trom Suakim announces that LieutenantColonel Riehardton, the Australian Commandant, is suffering from fever. The nine-pounder battery with which the Colenial Artillery were armed by the Home Government on their arrival at Suakim has bean presented to New South Wales by the War Office. The Austialian contingent will embark for Sydney eithor by the Union Steamship Company's Arab or the Peninsula and Oriental Company's Deckan. It is understood that the Hon. Mr Dalley has declined an honour offered him in recognition of his action in ottering the services of the New South Wales contingent to England. Sydxky, May IS. — Telegrams are to hand from South Town, on the Darling River, announcing that the police have arrested a man named Ilos.s at that place, suspected of being concerned in the robbery of the Horsham (Victoria) branch of the London Chartered Bank of Australia last year, when nearly £6,000 in notes and gold were abstracted from the bank safe between Saturday, March Ist, and Monday morning, March 6th. Ross had a credit balance at the bank of C 390 when arrested. Adelaide, May 19. — By the arrival of the MessagorioB Maritimes mail steamer, Mauritius advices are to hand to April 30th. Messrs Ireland, Fraser and Co. report of the sugar market as follows : — Crop accounts are favourable, owing to the fine weathor. The market is firm and dearer. The month's clearances of sugar include 600 tons for Christen urch and 300 tons for Dun - edin, while tho engagements include 300 tons for Dunedin and 200 tons for Wellington. Freights to New Zealand are 25a to 32s per ton, with a few vessels at -3s 6d. Exchange : It is impossible to purchase Australian drafts at any price. The stock of sugar in hand is 28,000 tons. The exports to New Zealand this season amount to 8,000 tons.
