j ; , (TO THE EDITOR.) . t ' Sir,— Can you. or any of your nuHmerou^ readers inform the public the reason why we Te Arohaites are paying, 4ji perloai for bread, when the other oakeis throughout the colony, almost without exception, are only charging 3d ? *Is4tot\ account of the txtreme prosperity of the place ? Are the mines paying large^ dividend., or is work plentiful and wages gDod ; or ! is it on account of the war? Surely there must be some reason that the-con-sumers are not aware of. »I see from the Hamilton papers that the bakers there only charge Bd', and I hear that some of the bakers in Auckland are only charging s^l for, the 41b loaf, whilst the home papers state that it is being sold at a permy f per 1b in England; ►the bulk *>f the wheat being brought from America, India, Russia, and the Australian Colonies. Surely there must be some way of altering this state of things. It is a very serious matter for paterfamilias with a large family; and little or no work. Cannot we take a lesson from our Hibernian friends across the" water and'boyeot the bakers ; let all wiio ea i bake their own bread, and those who cannot, club together and engage Gallagher's bus to. bring a cargo from Hamilton, say two or three times a week. It will pay him better than bringing passengers from Morrinsville as things go ; and it can be done at about a halfpenny per 1,0.if, we shall then be a penny per loaf t!ie gainer, and let tho Te Aroha haters boil in their own fat, or get fat on their own brea I, until they Cf>me to their senses a little ; or, if no other plan will do, let us form a company and bake our own bread, and in that way put an en<\ to the shameful monopoly. — I am, yours respectfully, New Chum.
(to the editor.) Sir,— l desire to direct attention through your columns to the dangerous condition of the roadway to Waiorongomai and Shaftesbury, close to Te Aroha, On Saturday evening last I was detained in Te Aroha till after it was dark, and in driving out, with a lantern, my Yankee waggon ran over a boulder on the roadway that projected at least twelve inches above the surface of the ground. Two of my children who were with m.3 were thrown out, and it is a miracle that they were not seriously injured. This portion of the roadway has always been very bad, the larger stones jolting the vehicles driving over them terribly. Apart from the danger of accidents, now that so many invalids are visiting Te Aroha, it is very desirable that the principal roadway out of the place shoulJ be put in such a condition that persons can travel over it in safety and comfort, and I suggest that if the Piako County Council I are in such an impecunious state that \ they cannot afford to spend the few pounds needful to remove this disgrace from the place, a small subscription should be made Tor the purpose. If this is dene, I am willing to contribute two guineas to the object. — I am, yours faithfully, Eeward Y. Cox. Shaftesbury, May 7, 1885. [The piecfe of rock referred to by our correspondent ought certainly be removed, as it is tiritlotlbtedly dangerous as at present. 'Wb would direct the attention of the County Engineer to the matter;— Ed. A.N.]
