A MYSTERIOUS TRAGEDY IN VICTORIA.
Mrs Beech, widow of Francis Beech, butcher and farmer, who was murde* ed in Pettavel in the month of January, 1884, and Frank Howarth, a farm servant to the decoasod, werearrcsted atmidnighton Saturday, 1 lth inBt.,on a charge of wilful murder. Howarth was arrested on a farm near Moolap. He wa*> in bed with his wife, and refused to open the door, under the belief that an attempt was being made by blackmailers. Superintendent Toohey eventually got admission, and the arrest was effected without a struggle. Mrs Beech was arrested in her residence, Myers street. The police discovered £76 in notes and gold, and deposit receipts for£lso in his room. Mrs Beech said that tho cash was obtained by the sale of eggs and butter, without the knowledge of her late husband. Ilowarth denied having ever possessed a revolver. A loaded gun was found in his bouse. He said it belonged to a neighbour,
and had beon left there for convenience. Our cable news yesterday contained the intimation that at the trial of accused on the charge of murder both were acquitted.
