THE PREMIER OF SOUTH AUSTRALIA ON LAND TAX LEGISLATION.
As our readers were informed last vretk,tht Hon. J. Colton, Premier of South Australia, who has been paying our city a visit which is to terminate to-morrow, was requested by the Auckland Liberal Association to deliver a public address on the subject of land and income tax legislation in South Australia. The following letter was also sent to the hon, gentleman : — 75, Queen-street, Auokiand, 7th March, 1885 Hon. J. Colton, Premier of South Australia.— Sir,— At a meeting ot the Auckland Liberal Association, held on the 3rd March, it was unanimously resolved "That the Hon. J. Colton be requested to convey to the people of South Au •*- traliathehearlyconßratulationsof the Auckland Liberal Association upon the fact that they have so nobly taken the lead in Liberal Legislation by »n opting a Land and Income Tax.— l am, Tour obedient servant, P. M. Grant, Acting-Secretary.
To this communication, and to the request to give an address, Mr Colton has forwarded the following reply :—: — Auckland. March 19th. 1885. Dear Sir.— Your favour of 7th March came duly to hand. Aa requested, I shall have much pleasure in conveying to the people of South Australia the resolution of your Auckland Liberal Association in re Land and Income Tax Act passed in South Australia. I regret very much that I shall not be able to comply with the request conveyed in your letter, viz,, to addres* the Auckland public on the subject I hope, however, you will convey to your Association my very hearty good wishei for their success, and also my sincere thanks for the honour they have done me.— l am, youis truly, John Colton.
