The Victorian Government have received a telegram from Lord Derby similar to that received by the South Australian Government as to the acceptance of further colonial troops for the Soudan. It is improbable the Ministry will do anything in the matter until Parliament meets. The "Adelaide Advertiser" severely condemns the proposed despatch of a South Australian contingent to Eirypt. Melbourne, March 9. The Official Gazette contains a memorandum irom the Governor, thanking in the Queen's name, those who recently volunteered in Victoria for service in the Soudan. The " Argus " suggests that the Gov eminent should offer •to send money instead of ttoops for the Poudan, as the Victorian forces may be required for local defence in the event of an embroglio with Russia. Melbourne, March 10 —The " Age" opposes the idea of despatching a Victorian contingent to the Soudan, and advocates strengthening the local defences. Great public enthusiasm is displayed in connec tion with the proposed Victorian contingent. Melbourne, March 10. — The Cabinet meets to-day to consider the question of despatching a Victorian contingent to the Si udan. Melbourne, March 11. —The replies of Victoria, South Australia, Queensland, and Tasmatio regarding the amended draft of the Federation Bill, will be forwarded immediately to the Imperial Government throug-h Mrßlyth, Agent General for South Australia. Melbourne, March 11. — At a meeting of the representatives of the Marine Insurance ompanies yesterday, it wai decided to provide for war premiums in futur on policies on homewards and outwards with (xieat Britain and the East, the rates to be dependent upon home advices. I he Cabinet yesterday decided to communicate with the South Australian and Queensland Governments to ascertain their views regarding tbe proposed Soadan contingent, and only act conjointly with them, afterwards to reter the question to Parliament, which meets on the 31st instant. Sydney, March 5. It is announced that Parliament will be called together on the 17th instant merely for business in connection with the despatch of the contingent to the Soudan. Rumour? are current that a vote of censure on the Government will be proposed. Sydney, March 7, The Government received a telegram yesterday stating that the Queen is greatly gratified at the account of the departure ot the New South Wales contingent, and the enthusiasm displayed by her loyal subjects. ihe Agent General wires the Government that the London " Times " speaks of j the embarkation of the troops as the most gratifying event in the history of the Em pire, and promises a hearty welcome for the men at Suakim. The " Pall Mall Gazette " says : No more cheering lines have appeared in English newspapers than those to record the complete success of the movement in New South Wales, and the intense enthusiasm displayed. Sydney, March 10. — The Governor has received a telegram from the Lord Mayor of London congratulating the colony upon its patriotic support of the mother country. Perth (West Australia), this day.— lt is believed the police have effected the capture of the murderer of the manager and accountant of the Union Bank at Roch burne, in January last. Adklaidb, March 6. The South Australian Government have received a telegram from the Colonial Office saying that if the colony independently, or conjointly, will despatch a force in time to arrive at Suakim by September, the Imperial Government will gladly accept of their services. Enquiry is made as to thfe numbei, description, and training of the proffered troops, and stress is laid upon the importance of the whole contingent drilling together for at least a month. Sir Wm. Jervois has been cordially re ceived here by all classes. Sydney, March 11 —The Ringarooma's passengers are released from quarantine, no fresh cases of small-pox having occurred. The patient James, the Bteward, is progressing very favourably towards recovery. Government have ordered active steps to be taken to strengthen the local defences.
About 3,800 shares in the Southern Cross Petroleum Company were sold at Christchurch the other day at prices tanging from 6d to Is 3d. Parihaka settlers are uneasy because of tbe breaking up of the constabulary camp in that district, and are communicating their fears to the Native Minister. '
