CABLEGRAMS. THE SOUDAN WAR. KASSALA CAPTURED. London, March 4.
An engagement with the rebels under Ostnaa Digna, is expected to take place on the 20th. The inhabitants of Kassala were reduced to great straits through famine before the town fell into tne hands of the rebels.
LOBD WOLSELEY'S EYESIGHT. Lord Wolseley, who is suffering from an affection of the eyes, will probably return to Cairo. The War Office are williug to supply officers and sergeants to the Australian contingents. A lnr#e sum has been offered at home towards the patriotic fund. The native troops in Hyderabad, Bhopal Pattiala, and Gheend volunteer for service in the Soudan.
RUSSIA AND AFGHANISTAN. The Russians have censed from further encroachments in Afghanistan, and have been directed to avuid any conflict with the natives. Earl Gmnville has approved of the action of Sir Peter Lnmsden, the British v'ommissioner, in advising the Afghans to resist. Russia professes a pacific attitude in the matter.
INCREASE OF THE BRITISH ARM? March 5. It is proposed to increase the English a*my by 15,000 men. THE AMERICAN PRESIDENT. General Governor Cleveland was installed ac President of the United States to-day.
GERMANY AND ENGLAND. London, March 4. The diplomatic relations between. England and Germany are at present somewhat strained in consequence of the contents of the English Bine Book and the German White Book on colonial affairs, recently issued. Prince Bismarck, complains of the publication in Blue Book of the report of an interview which took place between himself and Sir Edward Malet, the British ambassador. * <-' The Very Rev. Cannon.
