Charles Edward Stewart, who claims to be a brother to General Stewart,, recently killed in the Soudan, was arrested by Constable Dewes last evening on a charge of stealing a coat, the purloined article of wearing apparel being found on his back. Stewart is a noted thief and swindler. Amongst his property were found two subscription lists, one being headed "Subscription in aid of C. E. Stewart, who injured his leg against a rock in Sylnonds street. The leg is to bo amputated to-morrow," and the other, " Subscription list in ad of C. E. Stewart, who had his leg injured between two kauri loss." Infant mortality ii excessive among Fijians. During last year 1546 children under a year old died, being at the rate of 35*2 per cent. Willcox, postmaster and telegraphist at Alexandra South, Otago, has been brought before the local Court and remanded on charge of embezzlement of public moneys. Ngaruawahia brewery came very near being destroyed by fire last Wednesday. A spark from the chimney set the shingles on fire, and it was only by great exertions the place was saved. A committee has been appointed at Christchurch to collect subscriptions for the relief of 120,000 sufferen by the late earthquakes in Spain. Messrs Henderson and Macfarlane, Auckland, will receive subEcriptions. '
