The P. and 0. Company's R.M.S. Parramatta, Commander Anderson, arrived from Colombo at 1 p.m. yesterday. Passengers for New Zealand : Messrs Pascal, Tatham, and 50 tor all ports in other classes.
Later Mauritius News. Port Louis, February 10. The Hon. Mr Sfcien, M.L.C , having died, the Governor has appointed Mr William Newton, a barrister, to the vacant place. Mr kowton is au ultra-reformer, and until lately has not had a good word to say on behalt of the nominee Council. The sugar estate companies are smashing up one after the other, and in a very short time a third, or nearly half, of the sugar estates will be on the market, and will be sold cheap. It is understood that MiDavidson (Messrs Ireland, Fraaor, and Co.) is forming a gigantic company in London with the view to purchase and work these estates as they are sold. Ho is expected here shortly, The Donald Currie Company have offered to continue the mail service to the Cape of Good Hope for a subsidy of 5,000r5. per month. The health of Port Louis is very bad, and a fever opidemic is feared. Thore is a great amount of poverty and consequent distress in town and country, and the worst has yet to come.
