THE MINES.
New Find. — The- work of sinking the winze on No. 2 reef from the low level, is stiJl being- cnrried on by wages men. It continues to look well, some .really excellent gold is to be seen. Mr D. H BayUlon, the Company's surveyor, last week laid off the low level, ami as soon as instructions are received from Auckland, tenders will be called for driving same. The stopes on No. 2 reef, north and south from the winze,' still continue to afford good crushing dirt. The stopes above No. 1 level >ire also still yielding fair crushing Jirt. Work has been commenced on No. 1 reef from the Arizona level, the quartz from which will, when crushing, be kept separate The grinding of tailings for this mine has been greatly retarded, through lack of water.
May Queen — Work is being carried on in this mine by two shifts of men at present, driving in the low level. The drive is already in 100 f t; and it will be necessary to continue the drive 104 ft further to bring it under . the upper wirize, where the late good gold was obtained, and where it will be remembered work had to be suspended on account of the quantity of water. On Monday afternoon last some really good gold was met with in the drive, and a quantity of this dirt has siuce been got out and is now being taken up to the tramway for conveyance to the -battery, along with the parcel previously obtained, and will probably be treated some time next we^k.
Phoenix. — Operations in this mine at present consists in sinking a winze on the reef. Very fair quality of stone is coining to hand, gold being visible every breaking down.
Werahiko. — Work has been resumed in this mine once more. The staff consists of one mau and a boy, who are going 1 to work on a leaaer in order to get out another trial crushing.
