The field raced in this order until the far side of the couise was reached, when Snake was seen to have had enough. When the colours could be distinguished after the

start, it was seen that Sunray was loading, and he took the jumps at the side of the stand fully fifty yards in advance of Whalebone, Marmion being third, Now Year fourth, and the. others some distance behind. All jumped splendidly, and no ohange took place in the positions until the portion of the course obstructed from view Mas reached. Here it Beems a chapter of accidents took place. Sunray got into a treacherous bog, stunned himself, and threw Wattie, and Whalebone also fell, but Hadfield had the good fortune not to get unseated. Lily Langtry likewise came down.and was not afterwards persevered with. When the horses came in view, Whalebone had a long lead, Sunray being second, and Marmion, some distance off, third. In this order they approached the stand the second time, and it was then seen the race was virtually over, for Sunray was rolling about.
