NORTHERN RAILWAY QUESTIONS.
Kamo, February 23 Mr Knorpp,C.E., arrived here on Saturday on an exploring expedition from Kawakawa, via Mangakahia and Hikurangi. Towards evening Mr Hobbs, M.H.R., accompanied by the Hon. Hay Williams, M.L.C., and Chairman of the Bay of Islands County Council, and Mr Trenchard, member of the Bay of Islands County Council, arrived in the township, having travelled over the same line of country as Mr Knorp and Mr Mitchelson. Mr Moody, of the Bay of Islands County Council, with Messrs Lane and Gray, of Kawakawa, also arrived to-day. These gentlemen are well acquainted with the route referred to by Mr Stewart, District Engineer, in his report as published in Parliamentary papers, Public Works, 1580, enclosure 3, in Appendix C, page 42, and fully confirm his statements in advocating a different route from 21 miles il this line is to be considered as part of the northern system of railways, namely, that it should go through the Ramarama Valley to Kawakawa. To day, the whole party will accompany Mr Knorp, Mr Vickerman, and others, on the work of thoroughly exploring the country between Kamo and Kawakawa.
HWo ("Northern Luminary") understand the Bay of Islands Coal Company have applied to Government for a leasehold of 2,000 acres, which is now being surveyed by the District Surveyor, Mr R. Neumann. Tlio land is supposed, to be coal'bearing, and adjoins the present lease. In all probability entirely new workings will be the outcome of this new acquisition,
