The Mahditea attacked the troops under General Earle, both flank and front, and a severe engagement ensued, resulting in the complete defeat of the enemy, scarcely any of whom escaped . General Earlo, Colonels Eyre and Coveny and eight men killed. Four officers, including Colonel Wanchope, and 38 men severely wounded. Wolaeley expects to be able to open the way to Berber without further fighting. Colonel Brackenbury assumed command of the column in place of Earle, and will continue the ndvnnce to Berber. In the battle near Buka the Mahdites are estimated to have numbered 1500 men. The expedition to the Soudan via Sunkim, is placed under the command of Lieut. General Graham, with Major-Gene-ral Greaves as chief of staff.

A cabinet Council was held to-day, whpn it was decided to make an offer to the Imperial Government to despatch from New South Wales to Suakini within a month two batteries of artillery, properly horsed, and a battulwn of infantry, 000 strong, to form part of an expedition to the Soudan.
