GREAT SCULLING MATCH. Hanlan Beats Clifford.

Sydney, Saturday. Thk sculling match between Edward Han- \ lan, of Toronto, Canada, and Thomas Clifford, of Illawarra, New .South Wales, for a sfcako of £500 a-side, was rowed over the Champion Course, Parramatta lliver, this afternoon. Heavy rain fell before the race commenced, and tho water was consequently smooth. The race resulted in an easy victory for Hanlan by fully eight lengths. He led from start to finish, and was never asked to pull. Clifford rowed gamely throughout, but without effect. Time: 22mins. saecs. Hanlan's previous victories are so well known that they scarcely require repetition. Before he met William Beach last year he had rowed twenty races in wagor boats, and had never been beaten once. Beach, however, as everyone knows, succeeded in wresting from him the much-coveted title of Champion of the World. 1 his induced Hanlan to remain in Australia much longer than ho had originally intended, to retrieve his lost laurels. The first match has proved an easy victory for him, but ho has yet to row Beach for the championship, or to take the title from Clifford in the event ot the latter defeating Beach. The Clifford-Beach contest for the championship is fixed for Saturday, 28th inst., and four weeks theroaftor Hanlan is to row against Beachj while should Clifford uin tho first-named match, Hanlan will competo with him for the championship and £500 a-sido on 18th April next.
