THE PORTFOLIO OF MINES.

Wellington, February 7. It is thought in the best-informed circles that there is truth in the rumour that Mr Larnach will be called to the Upper House in the course of a month or two, and that he will then relinquish the portfolio of Mines and retain only tho portfolio of Trade and Customs hold by Mr Reynolds. It is thought not unlikely that the portfolio of Mines will ultimately be held by a member for a goldfields constituency. Messrs Cadman, Seddon, and O'Connor are freely mentioned in connection with the appointment. It will be remembored the former was a strong favourite for the position during last session.
