THE OHINEMURI COALFIELD

Fuom time to time notices have appeared of the Ohinemuri Con! Prospecting Association, and tlie excellent prospects they have obtained, and the knowledge that work is likely to be started shortly on a more permanent basis than hitherto cannot but be satisfactory to all. The Association is composed of Auckland saiireholdeis. It is probable that u start will be made fiis mouth to take out a tiia-1 lot. The seams are s-ituated ?»t Tara:iki creek ('lettur known as C)'».d Creek), :»t a point some 5. V or (> m! t j s lr»n Pneroa, and the work done m) far ha* revealed the existence of considerable deposits. Tureo bore-.'iok's ha*, c i»een put dowi) in the Snape of a tri.-utirle (two sides of which are 46 chain* in length), aim in each of them tnree siw.ins of good coal have been found. All the seams are almost flat, No. 1 dipping one foot in eleven, and No. 2 one in nine. In No. 1 bore hole, the first seam is 4^ft wide, in Nos. 2 and 3 bore-holes it has increased to sft ; the other two seams maintain a uniform t'ii<kne>s of 2ft in all three holes. From the outcrop, where it is intended to commence operations, the coal will ha,ve to be conveyed 2^ miles to the bank of the Ohinemuri river, and from hen* it is undecided whether it will be tak<en on in barges to Paeroa and the Thames (which could easily be done after the river had been snagged), or whether a tramway will be used to convey it to Paeroa, a distance of about three miles by load. The importance of having a plentiful supply of coal at cheap rates will be recognised by all at a glance, aud we hope, therefore, to see the Association extending its sphere of opeiations, an I (should the | trial prove satisfactory) losing no time in systematically working the deposits of •' black diamonds.
