THE MINES.

Nbw Find. — The work carried on in this mine during- the past week, Inv3 resulted in « slight improvement beinic visible in the appearance of the reef in the north end of the low level. The winze to meet this drive is now deep enough to connect with it, when the drive has been carried a sufficient distance. The reef shows geld all the way down. The stopes north and south of ! the winze on No. 2 reef are yielding dirt of average quality. The manager has been instructed to call for tenders for the sinking of a winze on No. 2 reef from tin* low level. The Manager has also received a telegram this week informing him that Mr Bayldon (the Company's surveyor), will shortly arrive, for the purpose of laying off a still lower level, which will give about another 100 ft of backs beneath the existing low level. This runnel will be made nt fcne joint expense of c.ie New Find and Dirt mom] Gully Companies, and will give tho farmer about 130 ft of additional backs.

Colonist — This company cased workinu on Saturday lust. Tue reason for operations being suspended is that the work recently carried ou in the low level has not proved to be sufficiently remunerative, the dirt got out being of too low a grade, and instructions we.c received by the manager to cease working until further notice, it is well known, however, that the quartz in the upper portion of th< j same block is of far better quality, and it is more than probable that work in the mine will be resumed again ere long.
