CURIOUS AND FATAL GUN ACCIDENT. Dunedin, February 2.
A curious gun accident formed tha subject of a coronial inquiry the other day. Robert George Campbell, aged Eixteen, had, in company with his father, James Campbell, gone to Akator on the Ist ult. for the purpose of inspecting some property there. On the following morning they were joined by Gordon Hilley. When near a creek on the far side of the property, deceased placed hia gun on a rock about two or three yards from where he afterwards set down his swag containing provisions ; and the swag slipping against the gur, caused it to discharge its contents, consisting of a No 3 cartridge. Immediately the report was heard deceased called out, "Oh, father, I am shot !" He received a wound in the inner thigh, and on assistance being procured he was conveyed to Waihua, and subsequently to Dunedin, where he arrived about 20 hours after the accident occurred. Medical assistance was immediately obtained, and deceased lingered till nine o'clock in the morning of the 27th ult. when he died. The medical evidence was to the effect that deceased had met with a severe gunshot wound, and that death was occasioned by secondary hemorrhage, the i\sult of the wound. A verdict of " Accidental death " was returned.
