Another of the old native chiefs has passed away to the great majority. Kar.iunu Hou, he-id chief of the 4 Ngatirahiii tribe, died at. the Piiriri, on the 27th inbt. It was throught Ktiruunu chiefly that the (iovernment were üble to purchase Te Aroha block ; he was ulways a good friend to the Europeans, remaining loyal through the great VVuikuto war, when all the tribes in the Thames left their homes for to wage war against tho Europeans. He also assisted the earliest swttlers, viz., MeKaskill and others wnen tuey first cairn to settle on the Thinner Riv«r, nearly ov years ago, and protected them ; th c Maoris at that time, und more especially the Thames native*?, being greufc cannibals, and some of the early settlers have seen them returning from Tauranga and other places with their slain and prisoners for the purpose of making a canuib.il feaßt. All the natives have left the J^ah for Puriri where a greut tangi is being held. We understand that none of the. tenders for the estate of Jud. Clarke, bankrupt have been accepted. The stock ( is now being packed up and forwarded to Auckland, where it will probably be sold by public auction. ,
