CHESS TOURNAMENT.

A-I/ckland, January 28. For bomo eight months past the members of the Graf ton Road Chess Club have been carrying on at weekly gatherings a chofeS tournrment, -which lias excited considerable interest among the local playors of the king of gamerf. Each competitor had to play 30 games, and as only one or two have yet to finish, we are enabled, with one exception, to *rivo the result. It will bo seen that Mr Wood carries off the first prize, which consists of a club set of chessmen, and that the second prize — a smaller set of chessmen— lies between Messrs 11. 11. Lusk and Sloman, the probabilities being' in favour ot the tormer. Mr G. S. Jakins offered as prize to the player who lost the greatest number of games Staunton's book on u Ches-s," and it is part of the irony of fate that he came desperately near winning it himself. However, Mr Burford has rolieved him of the dubious honour. Mr Sloman plays his two remaining games against Mr Boylan. We append the particulars of the tournament : —
