ANOTHER SLANDERER WHIPPFD BY A LADY.

Whiting from Aratapu, a correspondent of the "Northern Wairoa Gazette" says: — "A gumdigger, well known at the Red Hill settlement, who, though not of a very commanding appearanco, glories in the appellation of Captain SMS M met with a deserved castigation last Monday. He is a mischief maker, and delights in slandering his neighbours. Some time ago he chculated stories respecting the legitimacy of the children of a very respectable lady, and was warned not to repeat the offence. Last week, however, notices were placarded in prominent positions again impugning the chastity of the lady. This brought things to a climax. The husband of the injured lady called upon the Captain and demanded whether he was the author of the placard. The only reply vouchsafed was 'Perhaps so.' A severe thrashing would then and there have been administered, but at the solicitation of others the husband wisely forbore, for the Captain being dwarfed and feeble, and the husband in the prime of manhood, the consequences might have been serious. He cautioned him and returned home. His wife was, however, determined that the defamer of her character should not go unpunishad, so having received the consent of her husband, she set out to horsewhip the offender. She called at Mr Sandford's store for a whip, but was supplied with a stirrup strap instead Then, accompanied by a female friend, she went to seek the gallant Captain, one or two others following at a distance to see the fun. Captain S. was|found seated on his door-step reading the ' Gazette.' He was asked to repeat before the lady what he had said behind her back. The Captain began to quake, and pleaded innocence. He was found guilty, and was sentenced to receive several lashes with the stirrup- strap. These were administered over his back with commendable industry, and, as a wind-up, the second lady slapped his face severely. The punishment was well merited, and it is to be hoped that it will, be sufficient to check the lying propensities of the Captain."
