TE AROHA DISTRICT PUBLIC LIBRARY.
The annual meeting of subscribers was held in the Reading room on Saturday, the 17th inst. Mr Jas. Mills in the chair. The following are the Committees Report and balance sheet for the year ending 81st December 1884 :—: — The Committee have pleasnre in laying before subscribers the following report nnd balance sheet for the year ending 81st December last : — Although the past twelvemonths was a period of exceptional dullness in the d*'strict, it is satisfactojy to have to state that the institution lias continued to prosper. It hits now become firmly established, and its usefulness is recognised by the community generally, who have accorded to it a very encouraging amount of support. The income for the year was £98 14s 9d, in which is included the Government subsidy of £3± 4s 9d. The number of subscribers to the Library is at present ■41, and the Reading-room is being largely patronised, both by residents and visitors to the district, who find in it a convenient means of enjoyment and of information. During the year about 150 volumes were added to the Library, and the tables of the reading-room have well supplied with periodicals and the been leading home aiid colonial newspapers. The thanks of the subscribers are due to Mr Win. Ereritfc, sen., Te Aroha, and to Messrs Jas. Craig and T. L. Murray, LiKi.iies. for valuable domations of books and magazines. Your Committee thought it abvisible in the early pa*t of last winter to remove from tho former premises to the building mow in us , which, it was thought, would prove more comfortable and commodious, and t!ier« i is reason to believe t!ie enange has been advantageous to r.he institution. According to the by-laws the present Committee and office bearers retire ami it will be the dut\ of subscribers to appoint successors.
The Committee's report anil balance sheet were read ami adopted, and oflPce bearers for the cnrrent year were elected as follows. Mr J. B. Whyte, M. H. R., President ; Messrs Cuff and Human, vice-Presidents ; Mr George Wilson, Treasurer ; Mr A. Menzies, Secretary ; Committee — Messrs Mills, Pavitfc, Dobson, Peel, Gibbons, Ilott, Heathcote, Fruzer, Ahier, Farrell, Ashby, .Uenzies and Barnes. A vote of thanks to the retiring secretary Mr J. A. Dobson for his past servicos vras passed uuanimously. The usual vote to the chair terminated the proceedings.
