PUBLIC MEETING AT PORT ALBERT.
A public mcc ing was held at the Public Hall on Jan, 13, to consider the action of the Rodney County Council, at its last meeting, in appropriating two years' revenue on works, as per sohedule introduced without notice by the Chairman of the Council. Mr Thomas Hunt was Chairman. Mr Shepherd (member for Albert Riding) made a statement to the • effect /that he was much surprised that a proposition to spend so largo a sum sx money should have been brought forward and passed without the members having an opportunity of fairly discussing the maiter. He considered such conduct very arbitrary, and likely to still further incroase the unpopularity of local government by county councils. Messrs George Hartnell, Thomas Gubb, E. Hardwick, and P Becioft endorsed the view as expressed by Mr Shepherd, and it was I unanimously rosolved that the Counoil be petitioned to ro consider the matter. A medjeal club is being formed to, secure the services of Mr Gradwell This, gentleman, who has been a resident here for the past two years, had intimated his intention to leave the district. Those best able to give an opinion speak very favourably of this gentloman'g skill in the medioal profession. A committee, , has been formed *to idji t/be ■work connected with tho holding of the Agricultural Show on the first Wednesday in March next.
