The Bishop of Lichfield has issued a circular to the clergy of the diocese, re- i minding them that a curate in deacon's order* is not licensed to preach. Whenever a deacon is required to preach, he i* to read a sermon from one or other of the books named in' the circular. These sermons may be shortened or simplified, if necessary, but otherwise they are to be delivered by the curate as homilies sanctioned by the bishop of the diocese. On one Sunday in the month, however, the ! cur.ite is to preach a written sermon of his own composition, and next day the manuscript of it is to be sent to his bishop for exHiuinaUon. Tho bishop adds that it will depend upon the character of a curate's preaching how soon this restriction is removed ; and, in the meantime, any infringement of the rule thus laid down will more or less dulay ordination to the priesthood. Some English speculators have bought a track of land, in Mexico, comprising over 16,000 square miles, for £200,000. Tbe appointment of Messrs. W. W. Wiggins and A. Unthank, as postmasters at HiKutaia and Waihia respectively are gazetted. A petition was lodged with the clerk of the District Court yesterday, praying that William Carpenter might bo adjudged to b«a bankrupt. The petitioning creditor is George MjGaul, tinsmith, of Grahamstown, and the matter will probabily be heard of .it the next month'y sitting of the Court. — Thames Advertiser. At a meeting of the Te Aroha Domain Bnard, .held on Tuenday evening, Mr George Wilson was elected Chairm.in for the ens Suing year. Measures wore taken for increasing the occomodation of the baths by the erection of more bouses over th^ hot springs hitherto unutilised. This step has been necessitated by the very I irge influx of visitors during the last month or two. It was also decided to invite Sir Julius Vogel to visit the now famous springs.
