AUCKLAND RIFLE ASSOCIATION. Annual Prize Meeting. (From the Auckland "Star," January 5.)

Thk annual prize meeting under theauwpices of the Auckland Rifle Association took place on Saturday, at the new range on the Henderson racecourse. Very greo/t delay, however, ensued from, the experimental working of Mr Soall's new system of targets, and as a consequence only one match out of the six figured upon tho programme was got through before the last, train left for town, and even in it two men, viz , White and Brownlee, have yet to fire. This dilatoriness is attributable rathe?- to the inexperience of the markers v.ith the new arrangements for scoring, '.md also to the faultiness of some of the means employed by them, rather than to the system itself, which all agree to pronounce a decided improvement. Its serviceability was attested in the aifcernoon, when greater practice of it had tended to smoother working. The paste used for sticking fresh wads of paper »pon the bullet-perforators upon the target when marking was too thin, and some markers, after signalling the shot, resorted to the expedient of turning round t^e disc, and with its face hitting the waP sharply before withdrawing in oreter. to make it stick. Of course, this device* created great confusion and much dis r , u tation until it was stopped, and subsequently, if there was more assurance abou' | nQ m a'vking the markers were slower X affixing their wads. The best shooting was made in the morning, for after lunch time the wind chopped round more to the southward, and blew stiffly across the range, the targets being to the westward. The result was that at the 500 yards range the competitors had to aim from fa to 13 feet to the left of the targets in order to get upon them at all. This fully accounts for the mediocrity of the bulk of the shooting. The men fired in squads in the same way as they did at the last colonial pme-hring, and Captain Mahon and Lieutenant Osborne (as Acting Honorary Secretary) very effectively supervised all the arrangements. Just prior to the starting of the train for Auckland, a meeting was hastily held at which it was decided to continue the firing at Henderson this morning. Tho Volunteers accordingly proceeded out today by the 7.15 a.m. train. First Match (Mr Beck's Cup).— Ranges : 200, 400, and 500 yds .; 5 shots at each

As Mr Beck's Cup can only be competed for by Volunteers of the Auckland district, it falls, on this occasion, to the lot of Artilleryman Parslow.
