Horrible Outrage by Nihilists.
The Odessa military tribunal have tried the Nihilist chief, Leiba Deutsch, aged twontyeight. He was charged with a number of others, with attempting to murder, in 1876, one Gorenovitch, a fellow-Nihilist, suspected by his fellow - conspirators of treachery, and for this attempt three of them— Malinsky, Meidansky, and Drobiaskir — were hanged there, in 1879, during Count Todleben's Governor - Generalship. Deutsch would have shared their fate had he not previously escaped from Kief prison (where he was waiting to be tried, with 132 other persons, for taking a leading part in what was known as the Tchighereen affair) through the connivance of the gaoler's wife, and managed to reach Switzerland, where he resided until the Swiss authorities gave him up to the Russian Government, on condition that he should not be tried as a political criminal but as an ordinary one. Gorenovitch himself was not called, because he has lost entirely the power of speech. The criminals having killed him, as they thought, threw petroleum over him, and set fire to it, in order to prevent the recognition of his body. He consequently presents a dreadful spectacle, being without hair, ears, eyes, nose, lips, or tongue, and is obliged to wear a mask. Deutsch defended himself with great courage, coolness, and intelligence. The prisoner was found guilty, and sentenced to thirteen years and four months' hard labour. He was one year under age wheel the crime was committed, otherwise he would have received twenty years' hard labour. j
