German Annexation in the Pacific Londox, December "17.— Dr. Flensch, naturalist, has been appointed German Consul of the newly-annexed islands in the Pacific. The action of Germany in annexing these places is understood to be the result of negotiations which have taken place between the English and Genran Governments, and which commenced in July last.
Annexation. In discussing questions of the annexation of a portion of New Guinea and several Pacific islands by Germany, the "Echo" applauds annexation, and the "Observer" writes approving Prince Bismarck's intention to create populous German colonies in the Pacific. The only ground of objection is the possible influx of criminal classes. London, December 17.— 1t has transpired that there are twenty applicants for the Chair of Music, Adelaide University, to which a Bachelor of Music, Cambridge University, was recently appointed. The new capital of the South Australian Land, Mortgage, and Agency Company has been subscribed at a premium.
French Criminals. _ It is rumoured that the French authorities have decided to send their criminals to islands adjacent to Madagascar, instead of to New Caledonia and Ca> enne, asoriginaUy proposed. The German Reichstag has reduced tho vote placed upon the Estimates for Consulate purposes. A Vice-Consul is, however, to bsr appointed to represent Germany i in the Pacific. Reginald Brett, of Adelaide is about to register his proposed Financial Company with a capital of I'GOO.OOO. A prospectus of the Company will be issued early next month. A strong board of directors has now been formed. The prospects of the new Company appear to bo favourable. A French cable from Zanzibar to Madagascar is to bo completed by June next, and it will then be extended to Reunton's Island and Mauritius.
New Governor of New South Walos. In political circles a rumour is current that Lord Sandhurst is likely to succeed Lord Loftu.-, as Governor of New South Wales. The action of the Reichvtag in repealing the law empowering the authorities to expel priests from the Empire is stated to have met -«ith general condemnation in (lermany.
Princo Bismarck to Travel. It is^ rumoured ia diplomatical circles that Prince Bismarck, German Chancellor, intends to start on a travelling tour for the purpose of recruiting his health. A sensation has been created in Paris by a report that Bismarck shortly intends to visit that capital.
