Melbourne, Dec. 19. — Mr Berry, Chief 'Secretary, and Mr Langridge, Commissioner of Trade and Customs, proceed to jHobart next month to discuss with the
members of the Tasmanian Governmen the quostion of Reciprocal Tariff between the two colonies. Melbourne December 22. Mr Murk ay Smith, Agent-General in London, telegraphs to the Victorian Government that he has seen Sir Kobort Herbert, permanent secretary of thb Colonial ollice, t»nd that official doubts the reported .German arnoxation of the northern portion of Now Guinea, and Islands of New Britain, New Iroland, New Hanover, and Admiralty G roup. Mr Smith adds that the German Embassy in London denies the truth of the information received to that eilect, Sydnkv, Dec. 10. — In tho sculling match which has been iixrd for tho IZSth of February between Clifford and Beach, the latter has forfeited by mistako, and the match has been declared ofl". Another one, however, is now being arranged. Intelligence has readied hero that the Gorman 'flag has been hoisted and a protectoiate established over tho northern portion of IScw Guinea and the islands of New Britain, New Ireland, New Hanover, and the Admiralty Group. Sydnj-.v, Dceembor 20. At a fire which occut rod to-day ab Narlibei, in tho south of this colony, three persons lost their lives. The damago to property by the tire is estimated at €8,000. Sydney. Deo. 21. — A patient at tho quarantine station, named Casey, died of small pox. No fresh match has yet boen arranged between Beach and Clifford in place of tho une which was fixed for 28th February next, but which fell through owing to Beach forfeiting by mistake.
